Oh Help!!!

If you have ever read my blog and thought that every aspect of the ministry that God has called me to is amazing without any down sides, be encouraged that it's not.

Last night I blogged how amazing it was to watch the Holy Spirit move and change the hearts of those at this camp. Well, this morning, it was totally different. Everyone seemed tired and just done. And as I was preaching I was having thoughts of, "Wow, you really suck at preaching. No one is connecting with what you are saying right now." I don't like those times of teaching. However, it is during those times when we feel like that as teachers of God's word that we need to answer this one question: was I faithful in task of teaching God's word? To this I can say that I was. So, after that, I must cling to this promise:

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." - Isaiah 55:10-11; ESV

God accomplishes exactly what he wants to accomplish every time he sends forth his word. I didn't feel great during or after the message, but I know that God still did the miraculous. It's during times and situations like this that I trust God's word more than my feelings.

OH DANG in Ojai

Here is how my time with these junior high and high school students has gone so far:

First, last night, at our first chapel, I called people to surrender to Jesus and we saw 12 people stood up to surrender to Jesus.

Second: Tonight I looked at the Christians in the group and said, "If you're bored with Jesus, you're boring. Stop blaming God for your boredom." I then called Christians to stand during worship (at the end of the message) if they were tired of predictable Christianity and were ready to be radical for Jesus. As I walked off of the stage, the worship began and all but about two people stood up. And then from there, THEY BROUGHT IT IN WORSHIP!!! Seriously!!! I can't believe the worship we all just experienced, especially comparing to the "non-worship" that was given before God challenged us through his word.

God is on the move. Thank you for praying. Please continue to pray. I have noticed as God continues to work that the enemy steps his attack on me. However, I read 2 Corinthians 12:7 and thanked Jesus for allowing the attack to keep coming because it keeps me humble and reliant upon him.

I'm so thankful for what God is up to. I'll try to send more updates throughout the weekend.

Update from FLOOD Last Night

Hey Prayer Team,

Well, James has left the building.  He had to leave.  The series is over.  Jesus had us in the book of James at FLOOD for about seven months and he did amazing things.  Since January, when we started our series in James, we have seen

• 56 people surrender to Jesus
• 54 people get baptized

On top of that, we have seen people come forward for prayer and to see the FLOOD family come alongside of them and pray.  In fact, there's a group of high school students that always make their way up to anyone who comes forward to kneel at the steps during worship.  They aren't being asked to do this, but they do it on their own.  In fact, one of my favorite memories during FLOOD was when Glenn Gunderson, our senior pastor here at PFB, went forward to kneel at the steps to pray.  About 20 seconds after he went up, about 5 high school guys went up, layed hands on him, and began to pray for him.  BEAUTIFUL!!!

Last night we saw about 6 people stand to confess they they have been wandering from the faith and were coming back.  That was awesome.  We saw about 4 people come forward to be prayed over by the FLOOD lead team.  The worship was passionate.  It was a beautiful night.

"The Way To Know" - Oswald Chambers

I read the following from, "My Utmost for His Highest" today and it flippin' blew my mind.  Be blessed (or convicted :)

If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine … John 7:17.

The golden rule for understanding spiritually is not intellect, but obedience. If a man wants scientific knowledge, intellectual curiosity is his guide; but if he wants insight into what Jesus Christ teaches, he can only get it by obedience. If things are dark to me, then I may be sure there is something I will not do. Intellectual darkness comes through ignorance; spiritual darkness comes because of something I do not intend to obey.

No man ever receives a word from God without instantly being put to the test over it. We disobey and then wonder why we don’t go on spiritually. ‘If when you come to the altar,’ said Jesus, ‘there you remember your brother hath ought against you … don’t say another word to Me, but first go and put that thing right.’ The teaching of Jesus hits us where we live. We cannot stand as humbugs before Him for one second. He educates us down to the scruple. The Spirit of God unearths the spirit of self-vindication; He makes us sensitive to things we never thought of before.

When Jesus brings a thing home by His word, don’t shirk it. If you do, you will become a religious humbug. Watch the things you shrug your shoulders over, and you will know why you do not go on spiritually. First go— at the risk of being thought fanatical you must obey what God tells you.

If You Had To Choose

Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth.  For in these things I delight, declares the LORD." — Jeremiah 9:23-24, ESV


What are you excited about? What are you about? Some love sports.  Some love learning and reading.  Some love theater and the arts.  Some absolutely adore music.  Some love crafts.  Some love success and money.  Some love having power.  Some love to think about all of the lofty concepts that have ever been though, trying to get their minds around those issues.  Some love politics.  Some love complaining.  Some love helping people while others love tearing others down.  But what about you? What are you excited about?

In this passage, God...

1).  Gives a warning.  He tells Jeremiah to pass on these words.  First, don't boast in your wisdom and knowledge.  Don't boast in your strength or your power.  Don't boast in your wealth.  Do not boast in the things that "you have accomplished" or have owned.  And of course we obey this, because to disobey this would mean that I am arrogantly bragging about myself.  But, do we boast in those things in others.  I like sports.  I like watching sports, so please do not think that I am anti-sports.  But how much of our time (sports fans) is spent bragging and boasting in our favorite teams and/or favorite players and their abilities? How much of our boasting is focused on those who are incredibly physically gifted to play professional sports while neglecting and ignoring the one who actually gave those athletes those gifts and talents?

2).  Gives an invitation.  Christians, if you want to boast in anything, boast in the fact that you know God.  As a pastor it can be such a temptation to boast in the ministry that I am doing rather than boasting in the fact that I know Jesus.  Ministry is great so long as my love for Jesus is the motivation for ministering.  Think about it: WE GET TO KNOW GOD.  And what is he like? He is the LORD "who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth."  He is incredible.  He is beyond words.  His ways are beyond our ability to comprehend.  His love for us is so amazing that we have to ask for God's strength to comprehend how deep and wide and vast is his love for us (Ephesians 3:14-21).  


And the result of our boasting in God: "For these things I delight, declares the Lord."  It makes him happy.  And isn't that really the main thing that we want to do?

So if you like sports, great.  If you like theater and the arts, wonderful.  Music? Fine.  But if you find yourself more about these things rather than the God who gifts people to do these things, then you are definitely in the wrong.  If you think about it: we shouldn't need to be convinced about how amazing Jesus is.  This should be seen by those who claim to love him with everything they have.  But it is possible for us to get our eyes off of Jesus and onto the things that he has created.  This is just a reminder, one of which I needed to be reminded of myself.

So, if you had the chance to have lunch with Jesus or Kobe, which would you choose?

Please Don't Follow That!!!

And the LORD says: "Because they have forsaken my law that I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice or walked in accord with it, but have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them,..." — Jeremiah 9:13-14


Here is some of the worst advice: "Just follow your heart."  I know that this is shared by so many people.  When you just don't know what to do, someone will say, "I trust you.  Just follow your heart."  They are saying that they trust your gut - they trust the feelings that you have will be followed by good and wise decisions.  However, is this what Scripture would teach?

I read the verse above and realized that God is not too fond of that advice  Notice what John wrote in his gospel:

"Now when [Jesus] was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.  But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people, and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man." — John 2:23-25, ESV


Jesus said it himself:
"What comes out of a person is what defiles him.  For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.  All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person." — Mark 7:20-23, ESV


So here is Jesus, unwilling to completely entrust himself to anyone because he knew what was in their hearts, and yet we so often tell each other to just "follow your heart."

Here's what I think should happen:
Listen to your heart but follow God's voice and obey his commands.  I do not think that we should live without ever paying attention to the desires that we have, but when those desires come up, we must weigh them against Scripture and obey God's will rather than follow our desires, because the truth of the matter is that a large number of our desires having nothing to do with pleasing Jesus, but rather only desiring to please ourselves in ways that are not pleasing to Jesus.

So, DON'T FOLLOW YOUR HEART.  Rather, follow God's commands and trust his Spirit to lead and guide you into all that God has planned for you.  God has invited us to listen to his voice and to obey what he says.  He has called us to be obedient before we feel like we should be.

It's Simple: OBEY

"But this command I gave them: 'Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people.  And walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.'" — Jeremiah 7:23, ESV


It looks like there are a lot of commands in this verse, but it really is only one command in this verse.  God told Abraham that he had given the people of Israel only one command.  What was it? Obey my voice.  That's it.  Do what God said to do.  And yet the simplicity of the command was not seen in the response of the people.

God told them to obey.  He didn't tell them feel good about what he commands.  He didn't tell them to follow their feelings.  He didn't even say that they needed to agree with his commands.  Rather, he simply told them to obey his voice.

It is so easy to look at the Israelites back when God spoke these words to Jeremiah with contempt for them, but how are we all that different? He is still saying the same thing to us.  We are not called to obey him when it fits our schedules.  We are not called to obey if we agree with his commandment.  What has gotten into God's people that we actually believe that God's commands will always be commands that we agree with? Remember: he is calling us to a life that is different than our natural inclinations.  Be prepared: you will disagree with many of his commands.  That is why God has to tell us to obey.

I call myself a follower of Jesus.  I have submitted my life to Christ and his Lordship.  That simply means: I OBEY HIM.  Paul said it this way: "I have been crucified with Christ.  It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.  And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" — Galatians 2:20, ESV.


I live by faith.  My faith is seen in my obedience to Christ and his commands, not in the feelings that I try to muster up when I see one of his commands.  It's simple: do what he says.  Now let's make it happen.

Please Be Praying...

Here is an update on how you can be praying for me this week:

1).  This Wednesday night we are FINISHING UP OUR SERIES IN THE BOOK OF JAMES at FLOOD!!!! I can't believe it.  Who would have thought that a ministry could spend 7 months studying one book of the Bible? :) So please be praying as we close this series, and then be praying for me as I begin prepping for our next series in August called, "Ghost."  It's a three-week series starting on August 10th on the Holy Spirit.  It's going to be an amazing series.

2).  This Friday morning I get the privilege of officiating at the memorial service of Ray Fukuchi, a dear member of our family here at PFB Church.  Please pray for the family as they work through the process of grief with this unexpected passing of Ray.  Please pray as I meet with this family tomorrow and then prep the service.

3).  This weekend I will be speaking at a retreat in Ojai.  I will be speaking to junior high and high school students.  Please pray as I prep and preach.

Time To NOT Pray

"As for you, do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you." — Jeremiah 7:16, ESV


I read this verse the other morning and it stopped me in my tracks.  For all of my life I have been told to pray.  Whenever something comes up, just pray.  Of course, I have had to dig myself out of the pit that so many Christians fall into where we try everything possible when something comes up, and then when nothing else works we decide to pray.  But here in this verse, God says don't pray for the people of Israel.  Why? Because they were in rebellion.  They were running away from God by chasing after idols and worshipping false gods.  They were in complete rebellion against God.  So, God's words to Jeremiah were this: DON'T pray for them.  But how could he say this? I thought that God loved us? I thought that God's faithfulness was unending? Here is God telling Jeremiah to not pray for them because he would not heal them.

God's desire is that his people be all about him.  Why? First, because he is the greatest and the only true God.  Secondly, however, is because he knows that he is greatest good.  For his people to chase after other things without him stepping in to bring them back to himself is an unloving thing to do because he is not directing them to the greatest good.

So as I write that, I imagine some of you thinking, "But by telling Jeremiah to not pray for the people of Israel, isn't God doing nothing?" And this is where I do not believe so.  Remember Paul's difficult words in his first letter to the church in Corinth?

"It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife.  And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.  For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgement on the one who did such a thing.  When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord." — 1 Corinthians 5:1-5, ESV


I do not like applying this verse.  The couple of times that I have had to apply this have been so difficult.  By why would this be a necessary step in bringing someone back to Jesus? Because there are times when a person needs to be stripped of everything so that he/she will see that they truly need Christ.  Satan's job is steal, kill, and destroy.  He is not a friend.  He is not faithful or tolerant.  He is the father of lies who is filled with hate, rage, and murder. But God will use whatever means necessary to bring someone back to himself because he absolutely loves them.

So, don't stop praying.  Pray continually.  But also, ask Jesus how you should pray.  There will be times he says to keep on praying.  However, there will also be times when he tells us to not pray because he has to completely break the person before he can heal them.  There will be times when he says to continue to meet with an encourage a person through a tough situation, but there will be times when he says leave them completely alone to themselves and the sinful desires so that are completely broken.  It will be difficult to watch this process when the person you are seeing go through it is someone that you care about deeply.  However, remember that this is the most loving thing that God can do to bring this person back to himself — the Greatest Good.

Please be praying for me as I officiate at a funeral service today at 11am at PFB Church.  I want people there to hear about the hope that only comes through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  Your prayers are appreciated.  Thank you, friends.

Did You Hear Heaven Last Night?

ALL OF HEAVEN CELEBRATED LAST NIGHT as we watched a young adult stand up to surrender to Jesus.  Her first time at FLOOD was last Wednesday night.  When I talked with her last week after the worship service, I asked if she would be back next week.  She said, "I will see you next week."  And she came back.

At the end of the message, I invited people to surrender to Christ and receive him as Lord of their lives.  As I gave the invitation, she shot up.  She didn't stand up slowly.  She SHOT UP!!! If gravity was not a reality, she would have left the planet and our atmosphere.  Everyone celebrated.

This morning, I received a text that a friend of mine got from her.  Here's what it said:

"I'm still so shocked how God reaches out to me in so many different ways and I'm glad I was finally able to surrender and give him my all."

Isn't that AWESOME?!?!?!?!!!! Thank you for praying.  God is on the move and I am blown away.

I'm Back from Junior High Surf Camp

From Sunday through today (Wednesday), I was given the privilege of teaching the junior high students of PFB Church.  They spend 4 days and 3 nights at San Onofre State Beach.  During the day they learned how to surf and enjoyed hanging out together.  In the evenings, I was able to be their chapel speaker.  Here are the things that I was impressed with:

1).  This was a really good group of junior high students.  They were respectful of each other and of the other people who were camping around them.

2).  Andy (the junior high pastor) and his staff are absolutely INCREDIBLE!!! They have the perfect balance of love and discipline when dealing with these kids.  They were awesome.

3).  Jesus did some pretty amazing things at this camp.  I only spoke 4 times total.  The first night was tough as I taught them in the dark.  The worship time after was not very powerful, being that half of the students didn't engage in the worship time.  However, by Tuesday night, the whole group was engaged in worship of Jesus.

I also gave a chance for students to make a decision for Jesus last night.  Between 12 and 15 junior high students stood up to make some type of decision for Jesus (either surrendering or re-committing).  Then about 95% of everyone there (including staff and parents) stood up to say that they were all in for living out the missional life that Jesus has called them to.

It was a great few days.  Jesus, once again, showed up and showed off.  Below is a short video of the worship time on Tuesday night.  It was beautiful.

Prayer Update for this Week

I know that these usually come out on Mondays but I have a good chunk of things coming up that I would love for you to be praying for.

1).  This Sunday morning I get the privilege of teaching at PFB Church at all three services (8:30, 9:45, and 11:11).  I absolutely love getting to teach at "home" and it is always an honor for me.

2).  This Sunday through Wednesday I will be teaching at PFB's junior high summer camp down in San Onofre.  I am so excited for this.  We have 75 junior high students as well as about 27 staff members going down for a few days of surf camp.  Again, I love getting to teach at home.

3).  This Wednesday night I am teaching at FLOOD out of the book of James.  Again, I love getting to teach at home.  :)

That is a quick synopsis of what is going on this week.  I would also appreciate your prayers: my alone time with Jesus has be sporadic since I got back from Palau, with all of the catch-up that I'm playing.  That's not an excuse, just stating the facts.  I miss my alone time with Jesus.  That needs to happen and I want it to.

Thirteen Years Ago...

Today, 13 years ago, I stood on an altar before God, and committed my love and faithfulness to the most amazing woman.  I cannot put into words how amazing my wife is, or how thankful I am for her.  So again, like I say every year, I say again:

Kelley - If I knew what we would face and have to go through together back then on that altar, I'd sign up all over again with no hesitation.  I love you, babe.  Happy Anniversary.

Soccer and Prison

Yesterday was LONG!!! Oh my goodness. First of all, it was probably the hottest that it has been since we have been here. And of course, because Jesus has a great sense of humor, it was soccer day. We started out for about 20 minutes with drills and then the kids wanted to play. So, for an hour we ran around and played soccer. I sweat, but I gave a whole new meaning to the definition of sweating. I purposely wore a grey shirt to see what it would look like when I was done. It looked like I SWAM IN IT!!! :) The kids had fun and beat us 1-0.

Last night we went into the prison here in Koror. My job: preach. The response: between 8-10 prisoners surrendered their lives to Jesus. That was exciting. It was great to see their response. And the response of the rest of the prisoners toward us: they were some of the nicest people I have ever met. Our whole team completely mingled with all of the prisoners. It was incredible.

Today, it is another day of game playing and hanging with kids. I am getting a bit run-down with all of the preaching and moving from place to place. And I am not sleeping well at all. Also, it is a little bit harder of a day today because it is Dylan's fifth birthday today and I can't be there for it.

Please pray for God's encouragement and strength for me. I am ready to come home but understand that I am not done here yet. I want to be faithful and to finish well.

Crusades and Sports Camps

Yesterday was a busy day here in Palau. We drove to a village about 40 minutes away from where we are staying to run a basketball camp for the kids in the area. I had a blast getting to coach basketball again. I was able to coach the high school and college-aged kids while Ashley, Derek, Chris, and Jim coached the little ones. After the basketball camp, I shared the gospel with the students and then ate together (it was fantastic).

After the basketball camp, we went back to Koror to get ready for the crusade. We saw even more people come last night to the crusade. I preached out of Matthew 17 (Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration). When I called people to Jesus, no one responded but I am trusting that the Holy Spirit is still working on those who have not surrendered to him yet.

Heaven Is Celebrating Over Palau

Yesterday was a great day of ministry. First of all, we went to the hospital in the area. A group of Christians here in Palau hold a chapel service every Tuesday and Thursday at noon for anyone from the hospital (patient or staff members). It starts with a time of worship and then teaching. I thought that we were going there to visit patients and to pray over them. I didn't know we were going there for the chapel service. So, I wasn't quite prepared to preach a message, but Jesus was faithful and gave me the message once again to pass on to the people who were there.

Then we kicked off the sports camps aspect of the ministry with a water polo camp. The three guys (Scott, Nick, and Gavin) on our team who ran the camp were AWESOME!!! I was so impressed with them. After they were finished they talked with a young woman from the United States (I think she is from the San Francisco area) who teaches in the community college here in Palau. And wouldn't you know it: she loves water polo. So, on Friday, she is coming back (since Friday is a national holiday here in Palau) to play water polo. I do not know where she is with Jesus, but Jesus is making a connection between our team and her with the sport that she loves. I am praying for her to know him through this experience.

Last night I spoke at the crusade. We had a few more than the night before but a lot of new faces. I spoke on the crucifixion of Christ in detail. At the end I called people to stand if they wanted to surrender to Jesus. Two people stood up. It was awesome!!! I was excited to see lives changed once again.

There was one young lady (probably late high school) who caught my eye as I called people to surrender to Jesus. It just looked like there was a battle going on in her soul over this decision. In the end, she did not surrender to Jesus, but I have hope. In fact, I leaned over to a team member during the closing worship and said, "You see that girl over there? She is going to get saved before we leave Palau." Oh how I pray that that was a prophetic statement that comes true tonight.

After the crusade, I spoke with a dear older woman who adores Jesus. And she spoke encouragement into me as Jesus spoke encouragement into her. She said, "What if God doesn't use this team to reach the whole island of Palau, but rather uses this team to reach one person here in Palau who will completely change our nation for Jesus?" And in my spirit I said, "Amen." I so needed to hear that. I was beginning to wonder if anything of eternal value was happening through my teaching the people here. Discouragement was starting to set in, but that conversation helped so much.

Today, I will be helping run a basketball camp for kids in a nearby village. We also still have one more night of crusades. I am still praying for big things. Then, tomorrow, I will be speaking to the inmates here in the prison on Palau.

Crusades and Sports Camps Begin

I am so sorry that these updates are not coming out as quickly as I would like them to be. Internet is not as accessible as at home. :)

Last night we began the crusades here in Palau. I am till trying to get used to Palau time because of the fact that on time means late. :) We were supposed to start at 7pm. The worship guy didn't even show up until a little bit after 7. The crusade started around 8:15. :)

It was a good beginning for a week of crusades. We saw about 60-70 people come out for this first one. I'm praying for more to show up tonight. Last night was mostly Christians, so the message was geared toward encouraging them to commit to be followers of Jesus and to be used by him this week for his kingdom. We had a good response to that commitment.

Today begins our sports camp ministry with water polo. The high school students who are running the water polo camp are pumped. Please pray for them as they run the camp and that this will be a great bridge to Jesus. I think I might be sharing something at the water polo camp as well (they have me preaching like crazy here).

And then pray for tonight. Night two of our crusades.

I am not sleeping well so your prayers for sleep are appreciated. I did sleep pretty well last night, though. I am hoping for more of the same.

So Far So Good...

We have been here in Palau for two days. So far, I have preached three times. Yesterday (Saturday), I spoke at a church gathering. I taught on John 6 when Jesus fed the five thousand with fives loves and two fish. After I finished the message I sat back down. After about 2-3 more songs, the governor of the state where we were (she was at the worship service) asked me if I would teach again. Never have I had a group of people ask me to speak a second time. So, I did what any pastor/teacher would do. I PREACHED AGAIN!!! The second time I preached out of John 9 when Jesus healed the blind guy. It was a powerful time.

This morning, I spoke in a different church. I taught from John 11. At the end I asked if anyone wanted to surrender to Jesus. No one responded. I then asked how many needed Jesus to step in and do the miraculous in a specific situation. I saw about 5 hands go up for prayer. It was awesome.

God is at work. The crusades start tomorrow night and I am excited. I sense the Enemy attacking with discouragement, but I am hanging in there. I fight my thoughts constantly, striving to take every thought captive. Thank you for praying. Keep it up. I am convinced that God is getting ready to unload on this place.

We Made It... And It Begins

This is just a quick update saying that the Palau team made it here safe and sound. Thanks for praying. Keep praying. I just found out that I will be preaching at a church here in Palau tomorrow (Sunday morning). Then I will be speaking at crusades on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. On Thursday I will be going in to the prison to speak and share Jesus with the guys there.
